I loved working in this field as a public librarian and an academic librarian after getting my MLIS. For over 15 years, I've tried to get back into a somewhat permanent job, working as a library technician and assistant as well as in many temporary jobs. I've been lucky to have found work, but it hasn't been long-term or steady. Many of us are not finding jobs and there is a lot of competition. If you go into this field, be aware of this. Right now, I am reevaluating my options. Career testing, my job skills and strengths, and my love of the work tell me I should be here - but the lack of jobs over so long a time tell me to move on to other things.
I have had a wonderful and varied career. After my MLS, began work with a market research company as an information manager, worked as a researcher at a research and publishing company, moved into executive recruitment as an information manager and then knowledge manager ... then moved out of the corporate world into education. Have spent 10 years as a school librarian and love it! Library and information literacy skills are portable and give you great flexibility in choosing work.
