I have written for many years, and keep coming back to the idea of being an author. I need to know if I have the aptitude make it as a writer. Where do I go from here?
I think the best way to know if you have what it takes to be an author it's to start a blog. Write what you love, what you like and see if you attract an audience for it. You don't need to have a whole book written.
There are many other ways to see if you can make it, but all refer to showing yourself out there in the world. Send some of your work to editors, ask friends, family and professors what do they think of your writing and step forward.
I think you're totally right, Rebi.
I think there are two major reasons (1) Because you can get feedback for blog posts, and can improve your writing one post at a time and (2) because you will build a following of people who will want to read your work. And if you end up publishing a book, there will be fans that are ready to buy.
A writing prof told me the most valuable advice for writers: "A writer writes." I really think it's as simple as that. Sitting down to get the work done IS the hardest part.
Keep going, Les! You can do it. Are you writing on a personal blog right now? Would love to check it out!
