Question
Was there a spark that kindled your interest before you ever seriously considered being an Optician?
Answer
If you enjoy helping and working with people being an optician can certainly be rewarding. As an Optician your tasks and duties are but not limited to: advising patients about their eyewear options for both glasses and contacts lenses, billing and handling insurance claims, marketing and merchandising products and continuing education.
Becoming an Optician is easy but becoming a person who can relate to all kinds of people with unique needs is the ultimate goal. So the most important thing I did when I began this career was choosing to work for an Optometrist who would let me learn hands on. I later then followed up with educational courses and obtained my certification but this did not teach me the inter-personal skills needed to relate to patients.
I believe patience and compassion are two very important skills for one to have if they are considering this field. All else can be taught and or developed in time.
Helping a child or children in general has been the most rewarding experience as an optician. Children usually have no visual or material expectations so they are very excited when they get to see the world in a new way. These experiences have been the most rewarding fer me in my career.
I was fresh out of school when I entered my career as an optician. Previous to that I was not set on a certain type of career other than knowing I wanted to help people. Perhaps wanting to help people was the "spark."
