What is a Music Contractor?

A Music Contractor is a specialized type of Talent Agent.

A music contractor is someone who is somewhat of a music matchmaker. He or she has the job of finding the appropriate musicians for broadway shows, television episodes and commercials. By closely interviewing the hiring composer, conductor, producer or director, the music contractor will determine the perfect musical match.

The music contractor typically has a black book full of contacts in the music industry as well as a mental checklist of musicians they can go through when asked for a particular talent. Not only does a music contractor need to know what instrument and style each musician plays, but also what the musician's particulars are, like their contact information, if they are currently on tour, if they are willing to travel, and if they'll work weekends.

It is imperative to get the match correct the first time, as the union represents the musicians and they are difficult to fire if they don't fit in. The music contractor will also act as a liaison between the union and the musicians to ensure proper working conditions and proper pay.
